Bushcat at Mach 2.4

The Mach meter is on the left, and we're just approaching Mach 2.4 at an altitude of 18 km. The cockpit is very bright: the reflections are of my hand holding the pocket camera. Sortly after this we climb to 24 km, during which our speed drops to M2.2: still an acceptable speed!

Many years ago, a MiG-25 was clocked somewhere beyond Mach 3.2 by a CIA ground station in Turkey, which panicked people about this new fast interceptor. In now appears that the engines exhibit unwanted runaway above about Mach 2.6, and the aircraft can experience unwanted acceleration. It also wrecks the engines.

The dial at bottom center with the two knobs is a clock. This one wasn't running: since I've actually got one on my desk, I know why--although it has 27 V terminals on the back for dehumidifier power, it's clockwork and so must be wound up regularly. About 48 winds let it run for three days. The other knob resets it.
