This was the FUSSR's version of the Space Shuttle. It was somewhat smaller, and had no main engines but relied on the Energia's engines to reach orbit. There are two Burans in the neighbourhood of Moscow: a "real" one at Zhukovsky Air Base, which is not open the public, and a fake one which is a cafe in Gorki Park. I had a walk around the "real" one which was used for landing tests and was not space-rated. Unlike the Enterprise, which was dropped from a modified Boeing 747 for handling and landing tests, this particular Buran was modified with the addition of four jet engines, and could actually take off from a runway. The Buran was in its shelter at Zhukovsky Air Base near the hard pad where the MiG-29 and MiG-25 were located. I walked to the back of it and had a quick look around, but there was no activity in the area at all. However, it did appear to be connected to a power cart (which was not operating). The heat-resistant material felt strangely light to the touch.
